Want a peek behind our Gate? How about a free Bouquet?
I have lived in Centerville all my life. Its a small, quiet, safe comminuity that I love. But many things have been changing around here very quickly. More and more I find myself returning to my land. Our quiet, wild corner, unchanged for decades. I feel as though I am a steward for this land and it's my job to keep it healthy and safe. I have spent years bringing the soil back to life. During the process I have brought so much life back to this land. Living soil nurtures living plants. Living plants are the home of insects and small animals, which bring the owls, snakes and foxes. All of this has given me a new look on my own life. I want to share a small piece of this beautiful life to my community. Nothing brings joy like the beauty of nature. Nothing is more natural then a single, loved, field grown flower.
Most flowers are grown in different countries, fed synthetic fertilizer, sprayed with poisons, flown on a plane while pumped full of chemicals to help them stay alive till they get to the store. Then they are bought by men who don't know what else to buy their angry spouse. I hate that whole story. I want to bring beautiful, healthy flowers, to strong women, who know what they want. Wild women who want more from life then old, chemical-ridden red roses. Empathetic women who know the world deserves better, and they deserve better. Our flowers were planted and grown with love. Every stem was a home, a source of food, and its roots fed the soil which will support the next generation of flowers. It's a beautiful cycle. We welcome you to come and be a part of our story.
Like many of us, I come from a long line of women who were amazing gardeners. My great grandmother made rhubarb pie and horseradish with ingredients fresh from her garden. My grandmother planted flowers in her garden every spring. My mother taught me how to plant bulbs and harvest greenbeans. When my husband and I were looking for our first home together, as soon as we saw the yard here we were hooked. Here in the heart of centerville we found our paradise.
When I started gardening, I planted vegetables. Tomatoes, peppers, beans, pumpkins, the usual. I loved it! Every year I grew more. I tried new things, different things, anything I could think of. Found raspberries and blackberries bushes on clearance so I grew those. Flowers? I can't eat those, why would I bother? What's the point? I have perennials in the front yard that require no care and bloom sometimes, good enough for me.
Ever order seeds from a catalogue and get some free packets thrown in there? Best day ever right? Well one year I got some marigold seeds thrown in with my tomatoes for free. Marigolds?! What am I gonna do with these?! I heard they make good "companion plants"... whatever that means.... so I threw the seeds out in the spring and wished them luck. It was spring and I was busy. Well I'll be damned if they didn't grow. They were so pretty! Easy to grow and pretty, well that's fun. Definitely worth what I paid!
The next summer I bought some more marigolds and some zinnias. By then I had opened our farm stand. I was already growing more produce then I could use. The flowers were a fun, pretty change. I also noticed something else happening... when I started growing flowers, I was actually getting more produce. The flowers were bringing in more pollinators then the vegetables ever could by themselves, and more pollination means more produce. In retrospect it was obvious. That was only the beginning.
After my love of growing flowers was discovered, I spiraled. I expanded my garden, grew rows of flowers, and went back to school. I became a master gardener volunteer thorugh OSU, started teaching others about how to grow and heal their small pieces of land. Then I filed for my LLC for The Daffodil House. It seems silly to think that flowers are so important, but when you help a little girl build her first bouquet of flowers.... that look of pure, innocent, joyous light in her eyes is all it will take to convince you. Our grandmothers knew the power of fresh flowers on the table everyday. Let us all rediscover the natural joys that fresh flowers can bring into our lives. I dare you to hold a bouquet, smell it, and not smile. Double dog dare you.
